Development of H2 to Ta'us Andrew Stowell of Perth, Australia tells an interesting little story that sheds light on the design changes between the H2 design and the later Ta'us. Here it is in Andy's own words (March 07):
"I thought I would share with you how I inadvertently became involved
with the development of the Ta'us speaker."
"I was living in Brighton [UK] and had recently purchased some H2's from Mahesh
Patel to take with me to Australia, their here with me now in Perth, Western
Australia. I was in temporary accommodation and had my system set up in a first floor
bedroom which had a wooden floor. The most bizarre thing was happening, the
room was completely devoid of a bass note, I mean nothing. But if you went
downstairs into the kitchen the whole room had become a bass box, with no
mid or treble. Also the sound stage had become linear across the room in
line with the front of the speakers. As I am sure you are aware H2's have a
great soundstage normally."
"So I telephoned Mahesh and he was intrigued enough to come down and hear it for himself."
"We spent a whole day playing around with positioning of the H2's, I had been playing around with some "Fluffy Duck" bathroom carpet tiles, which I found when placed inside of the cabinet, behind the mid-range driver, would immediately bring the soundstage back to the fore. I had also been playing around with "Diflex" panels, which Mahesh and I found worked really well when we put them on top of a concrete paving slab, we then sat the H2's on top of this. We found we could tune the bass by moving the " Diflex" panel around on the paving slab."
"Mahesh left Brighton with a vision of changing the next Impulse speaker to allow for smaller rooms (apartments) to have bass without transmitting it downstairs. So the next range of Impulse speakers had enclosed rears, instead of open vents behind the mid driver (for the soundstage projection) and an integral floor (with Diflex) to tighten up the bass in those environments."
"Well there is my story, nothing earth shattering I know, but interesting none the less. I have had my H2's tweaked here in Australia by changing the tri-wire configuration to a single binding post layout, together with placing better caps on the crossovers. I drive them with a pair of Belcanto Evo 2002 monoblocs with Luminous cables. Still love them!"
Thanks Andy!
